After high school I attended a one year program at Greenmount Agricultural College (UK), then entered the Faculty of Agriculture at Queen’s University (Belfast). There I specialized in botany obtaining a BSc and a PhD in plant physiology. In ‘68 I joined the University of Calgary as an Assistant Professor and later became a Full Professor and then Head of the Dept. of Biological Sciences. My research, which lead to the publication of about 170 scientific papers, dealt with how plants respond to stressful environments and environmental changes such as drought, heat, cold, poor soil conditions, wind, air pollution, and elevated CO2. I have been a member of various Provincial and Federal scientific committees dealing with environmental and agricultural matters. Currently I am an Emeritus Professor of Biology. I have numerous interests including problems of global climate change, hiking, gardening, painting and writing.
