Cathy has been working to build:
• Reliable and sustainable public and post-secondary education funding
• Universal quality childcare for our most vulnerable children and to enhance the participation of women/parents in the workforce
• Affordable housing alternatives, especially for young families, new Canadians and seniors
• Removing barriers to equal opportunities in education and the workplace for vulnerable groups
As a lifetime member of the Alberta Teacher’s Association, Cathy Welburn has been very active in supporting teachers, as well as advocating for quality childcare and fair access to public education for all populations. Born and raised in rural Alberta, Cathy uses her arts and culture background to raise awareness of and support vulnerable people.
She has worked on behalf of affordable housing choice causes, such as co-op housing and community housing. Cathy often uses her skills to raise money and awareness for women’s emergency shelters, at-risk children’s groups, and to combat racism and bullying. She has been the coordinator of a not-for-profit arts group for decades, working to connect with multi-cultural groups to promote inclusivity.
Since graduating with a MEd in English Language, she has also taught college and university students and works with immigrants and refugees at the Welcome Centre in Calgary, where she teaches English as a Second Language.
