Jim is one of five children and grew up in Grande Cache. His dad worked in the coal mine and taught him the value of hard work and persistence. Jim also worked at a coal mine for seven summers to pay for his university education. He began his own law practice, fighting for the property rights of farmers and ranchers. In 2004, Jim was elected to federal parliament and served as cabinet minister in Environment, Energy and Indian Affairs. After federal politics, he worked in the financial industry. In September 2014, he won the leadership of the PC Alberta Party and became the 16th Premier of Alberta.
Jim and his wife, Karen, have three daughters and two grandchildren.
Why I’m running
Alberta is at a turning point. Our province needs to make dramatic changes or we will continue to face an unstable and unpredictable future. I have put forward a realistic plan to secure Alberta’s future for our children and grandchildren. It takes immediate and long-term action to get us off the oil price rollercoaster and balance the budget in three years. It’s a plan based on fiscal responsibility, saving for the future and protecting frontline services. It’s a plan that invests in infrastructure, maintains our ability to attract and grow companies and protect jobs. Along with the Prentice Team, I’m ready to get the work done.
I know the road ahead isn’t easy, but as my father taught me: anything worth having is worth working hard to achieve.
